A Career in Community Health
Why work in Community Health?
The services and programmes managed and delivered by Community Health Services (CHS) are diverse in variety and scope and aim to improve the health and wellbeing of Victorians. CHS respond to the needs and expectations of the local community through a range of services and include health promotion and prevention, early identification and intervention, assessment and treatment, coordinated care with healthcare providers and the acute and mental health sectors. CHS also deliver a range of other primary health services including case work and counselling, drug and alcohol treatment services, dental, medical, post-acute, aged care and mental health services.
Rewarding and Challenging opportunities
Community health operates within The Social Model of Health framework and multidisciplinary, multifaceted approaches to health at both a population and individual level are integral to community health activities. Community health practitioners work as part of a multidisciplinary team and make a significant contribution to improving the health and well being of Victorians, particularly low income earners, older people, children, refugees, new arrivals and other disadvantaged groups.
All local government areas in Victoria have CHS and the size and diversity of services is reflected by community needs and funding. Agencies are located in the metropolitan and regional areas of the state.
