Launch of VHA Position Statement Population Health Approaches to Planning: Definitions

The VHA has commissioned the Department of Health Social Science at Monash University to undertake a large scale population health research project. This project "Population health approaches to planning for the Victorian healthcare system" aims to support healthcare agencies across Victoria to build their skills in, and understanding of, population health approaches to planning.

The VHA are pleased to launch it's Population Health Position Statement - Definitions, which articulates the meaning and purpose of population health and population health planning and also provides guidance of the four core components and eight best-practice principles that are required to achieve effective population health approaches to planning.

Elective Surgery Waiting Lists

Position Statement pdf1.gif

Health service performance and access indicators are necessary to measure how well the whole health system is working. However, the VHA is concerned that the current elective surgery waiting list process is ineffective as a measure of service access, unreliable as a benchmarking or prioritisation tool, and popularly misused as a measure of how well a health service is performing. This position statement outlines the need for changes to be made in the design of health service access and performance indicators, and how they should be more appropriately measured and used.

Medicare Locals

Position Statement pdf1.gif

The VHA supports the introduction of Medicare Locals and believes their aims (if realised) will be beneficial to improving health and wellbeing outcomes for local communities. To ensure these goals can be met, it is fundamental that their structure, function, governance and boundaries are carefully planned in order to realise the short-term and long-term goals of the organisations. This Position Statement outlines the VHA's position on the preferred structure and governance of Medicare Locals.
