Mental Health Mentoring program FY2024

Program overview 

The VHA’s Mental Health Mentoring Program is in full swing, with significant progress already made. One cohort has completed the program, three are currently in progress, and the final three cohorts are about to start. This program offers practical training and skill development in mentoring and coaching, equipping participants to provide mentoring and coaching to peers and junior staff within the workplace, as well as build supportive peer coaching networks. 

While we are almost fully subscribed for the remaining cohorts, we are happy to continue to accept your expression of interest, and to place you on a waiting list should places become available.

Team leaders or program managers working in Local or Area Mental Health Services in Victoria are encouraged to apply. This program is a key step towards fulfilling the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System and the Mental Health and Wellbeing Workforce Strategy 2021-24. 

 

Program highlights 

  • Immediate application: Gain skills that you can immediately apply in your role, enhancing your day-to-day effectiveness and leadership. 
  • Networking opportunities: Connect with peers across Victoria, creating valuable networks for support and collaboration. 
  • Enhanced curriculum: Building on feedback from your peers who completed this program in 2023, the 2024 program has been revised will delivered by the VHA in in partnership with Assoc Professor Donna Markham and the team from Disequilibrium consulting.  
  • Fully funded: Sponsored by the Department of Health Victoria, there is no cost for eligible participants or their organisations. 

The program involves 25 hours of coursework, available both online and face-to-face, to accommodate diverse needs and schedules. While additional resources will be provided, there is no requirement for study outside the scheduled course hours. To maximise the program's benefits, we ask that you ensure you have the necessary time and space to engage fully with the coursework and peer interactions. This is a fantastic opportunity to build your practical mentoring and coaching skills at no cost. Donna Markham 

Donna Markham

Adj Associate Professor Donna Markham is the former Victorian Chief Allied Health Officer, a certified organisational coach and registered occupational therapist who has worked in healthcare for more than 20 years. Donna established her own business in 2021, Disequilibrium, the sweet spot where growth occurs - coaching and supporting professionals in the workplace as well as providing facilitation and consultancy services.

Donna has held leadership roles within health services and the Victorian government, and has worked across health, disability and community sectors. She is a mum of two boys and advocates for the important role women play both at home and in the workplace, particularly in executive leadership positions. Donna is passionate about the importance of self-care and well-being.

Donna was a finalist for the Telstra Victorian Young Business Women's Award in 2014 and is a graduate of the Williamson Community Leadership Program, the Australian Institute of Company Directors and is a certified organisational coach with the Institute of Executive Coaching and Leadership. Donna was awarded a medal of order (OAM) in 2022 for her contributions to health care administration.

Dan Lonard

Dan Lonard

With over 20 years of experience in the healthcare industry, Dan Lonard is the founder of inwardreach, a coaching and consulting organisation that supports individuals and teams to reach their potential and bring the best version of themselves to work and life.

Dan is family focused with a partner and two boys and enjoys living in nature in the hills on the outskirts of Melbourne. He is a keen gardener, camper and focused on self-improvement. He is passionate about the changing role of men at home and in the workplace and being part of the conversation on healthy masculinity.

Dan has a Bachelor of Medical Radiation Science (Diagnostic Radiography), Master of Business Administration and is a certified organisational coach with the Institute of Executive Coaching and Leadership (Level 2 Certification).

Kerrie Walter 

Dan Lonard

Kerrie Walter is a registered physiotherapist with over 25 years of experience in healthcare. Her career includes leadership, consultancy, project management, and expert clinician roles in acute health and community health sectors, state government, and public and private organizations.

She is a certified executive and leadership coach with the Institute of Executive Coaching and Leadership (IECL), focused on empowering individuals to realize their full potential, improving service delivery, and enhancing the consumer experience of care.

Kerrie is passionate about sustainable workforce solutions, service delivery, and continuous service improvement. She has completed studies in improvement science at the Institute of Healthcare Improvement (IHI) and is a recognized IHI Improvement Advisor.

Helen Rizzoli

As the General Manager for Sector Capability at the VHA, Helen brings strong leadership, system design, facilitation and coaching skills to identify the most urgent professional development needs of the sector, to connect individuals to opportunities that will assist them to grow their understanding and knowledge, and to create safe spaces where these skills can be practiced.

Helen has worked in the health sector across Australia and in the Middle East for over 30 years in roles spanning leadership, strategy and performance optimisation for both service providers and government departments.

Helen is passionate about continuous learning and has recently completed the Executive Master of Public Administration (EMPA) through the Australian and New Zealand School of Government.

Helen is a member of the Institute for Executive Coaching and Leadership (IECL) and is currently working towards her ICF ACC Credential.
